How Long Have You Been Blogging?

For most of us, it's a labour of love. More often than not, we pour our hearts out onto the the keyboard and what results gets seen by dozens, sometimes hundreds, if we're lucky even thousands of people. Then it disappears into the murky depths of the internet and isn't seen again.

So after some discussion with a few people who take part in the monthly Question of the Month bloghop, we've decided to start a new initiative. It's called Flashback Friday - a time of the month where you can republish and old post of yours that maybe didn't get enough attention, or that you're really proud of, or you think is still relevant etc. Personally I can think of a whole bunch of these.

If you'd like to join us, we've decided to make this happen on the last Friday of every month. That means the first one will be on the 27th of May. Enter your blog's name into the Linky List below and grab the code so you can put the list on your page and spread the word.

<!-- start LinkyTools script --> <script src="http://www.linkytools.com/basic_linky_include.aspx?id=269358" type="text/javascript"></script> <!-- end LinkyTools script -->

  1. I've been blogging since September 6, 2010...a total of 1684 posts and 4,732,702 page hits. You're right about it being a labor of love. For a lot of those years, I posted daily, but I've slowed it down to twice a week, because of family obligations. Most people have no idea how much work goes into posting and how disheartening it is when a really good post gets almost no attention. I've almost quit blogging altogether several times when my readership hit a slump. Michael, I salute you for giving some of those posts a second chance.

    1. Over 4.5 million hits?? I've been doing this 2 and a half years and I haven't hit 100k yet. I'm glad you share my concerns about content though :)

  2. November will make eight years for me.
I think I finally crossed a million hits. I don't really pay attention to hits though. Comments matter more to me. (And I think 350 or so was the most I ever got on one post.)

    1. That's insane, my best is like 72. My second best is in the 50s and it gets lower from there. It's cool that such a high percentage of your audience is that engaged with you.

  3. Hi Mike. There's an error in your copy/paste for the linky code, I think it's because it adds your page reference when I copy anything from your pages. It puts an extra http://www. in the code to follow the highlighted address. Maybe if people see this they can just edit it themselves :)

    1. Thanks for letting me know, although I have no idea how to fix it :P

  4. What a great idea, Michael! I've been blogging since September 2008, so for nearly 8 years now. I have soooooo many polished gems of genius that didn't get any luuuuuuv the first time around, LOL! I may post an occasional one in furtherance of your blog party but I won't "formally" sign up just in case I can't keep my commitment.

    1. Hahaha fair enough. When I do come around to visit, your posts are on point.

  5. I've been blogging for five years but have only really put effort into being a good blogger for the past two and a half or so. Even during that time, I don't think I have any posts that are worth resurrecting. Hmmm. That makes me think I'm not doing so well with the whole "being a good blogger" thing. :)

    1. Hahaha surely you're being hard on yourself! There must be some posts you're proud of having written?

  6. What's cool is the ad for your blog is for an insurance agent near my little town in the Southeastern US and you are in Australia.

Now be impressed. It was a thrill to be sure. Cheers, Ann

    1. I wish I could say I did that on purpose, but Google are responsible for that :P

  7. I've joined and am searching for the perfect first post to repost. =) Although, my blog doesn't seem to like the code for the linky. There should be an alternative code that's not Java script. Can you share that?

    1. Phew! Lucky I don't have to try and work that one out :P

  8. We've been doing this for 6 years and... we still are no closer to figuring out how to do this right. But what Alex said is true, engagement is way better than a bunch of empty hits. At one point we were getting something like 20,000-30,000 hits a day, which looks awesome on paper, but e-mails/comments weren't half of what they are now, and the same with book sales. It was empty calories. Now we get way more comments (and replies), way more e-mails, and way more book sales, and our traffic is like 10% of what it used to be. Quality over quantity any day.

  9. Every year in December I participate in the Deja Vu Blogfest which is a similar concept except only once a year. Right now I have so much content I guess some could be repeated. I try this and see how it goes.

  10. THE DOGLADY'S DEN has been around since 2009, but it was just music videos back then. I started to get serious about actually blogging in 2012 and switched to a self-hosted website in 2013. This is a great idea! Some posts are timeless and deserve another go.

    1. Absolutely, it will be good to bring out posts from back when I didn't have as many readers.

  11. This is a great idea! I've been blogging for almost three years now and I'm sure there are posts from my early blogging days that new followers haven't read. Plus, this appeals to my lazy side :-)

  13. I'm 5 years in and coming up on 300,000 views. I've really slacked off the last couple of years. Basically, as soon as I got married, but I'm trying to get started again.

    2. She does keep me busy. She's dragging me off to Turkey next week and we're probably moving to China in a few months. I'm a world traveler now.

  14. I saw your email about this last month with the QotM and I really like this idea. I blogged for three years with only a few readers that I know personally because I was not involved with the blogging community at that time. So it would be great to bring back some of those posts :)

    1. I'm the opposite - I dove right in to the community, but as my community grew it became too much for me to keep up and I stopped visiting people. As a result I completely understand if and when people stop visiting my page.

  15. I pasted the script in a blog post of mine in html mode. But I did not get any output. Flashback Friday Project But I am happy to participate in the Flashback Friday as it gives me any opportunity to update my posts and bring them to life once again.

  17. So, the blog will never win any awards or ever get a million hits, but I have 'met' some wonderful bloggers and learned so many things. And many posts I read give me so much to think about. Thanks for starting this. I'll try to get my old brain to remember this next month.

  18. Hi Michael,
Are you still continuing Flashback Friday? Is someone else taking over for you?
    Thanks

    1. Hey, I did approach someone to take over, but I don't think I got a response. I'll try again, but if they still won't reply, would you like to do it?

    2. Thanks for the vote of confidence. :) I'm in my 70''s and focused on communicating through my blog with my children and grandchildren. I was wondering if I should continue setting up a 'FlashBack Friday' post and link it to your site. I hope someone comes forward to take it over. Thanks!
