Obama's War On Gun Control Made Simple

  1. He's waffled a bit, hasn't he?
I would never own a gun, but I do support our right to own guns. However, in-depth background checks need to happen. At least keep guns out of the hands of a few psychos. (Because you know the real criminals will find a way regardless.)

    1. Like Jim Jefferies says - You can change the Second Amendment. That's why it's called an Amendment.

    1. It's one of the very few moral debates on which I have a strong opinion.

    1. Hahaha yeah I got you were being sarcastic. Although it's always best to make sure ;)

  4. I live in a state that has more guns than human beings. We also have one of the lowest crime rates. Not saying the two are connected, just a fact. And yes, my family owns lots of guns.

    1. I understand. In Australia we have a very biased view because we got rid of all autos and semi-autos in '96 and we haven't had a mass shooting since. But the story would be very different where you are.

  5. Illegal guns will never stop being made available in this country. There's too much money involved so while the background checks should be better, we are so far off the mark.

    1. Even if the big guns were made illegal, I imagine there would be so many people selling them on the black market that it wouldn't really make a difference.

  6. I stay off the topic because it is so frustrating. We've been lucky to have such a President as Obama. Historically, Americans have been a volatile lot when it comes to opinions. We've got a political party self destructing with fanaticism this election cycle. The world was a mess when I was born and will be a mess when I die.

    1. In my country I've almost started to think of the far right as an urban legend. I hear so much about these ultra-christian, misogynist gun-toting types, but never actually see it in person. They seem to be everywhere in America though.

  7. The NRA is one of the most powerful organizations in the U.S. Once upon a time, they concentrated on teaching gun safety and hunting. Then they became a political organization. I'm tired, and I'm not sorry that Charlton Heston died.

    1. Yes, he's been dead for quite some time, but he was an important figurehead as the president of the NRA. So many people remembered him as a gorgeous young movie star. I never saw him as anything but an old man who yelled, FROM THESE COLD DEAD HANDS. The NRA didn't even cancel their convention in Colorado that was scheduled not long after the Columbine shootings. I admit I know nothing about Marilyn Manson's music, but he had concerts coming up in Colorado and canceled them out of respect. But not the NRA. I believe Charlton Heston had Alzheimer's. I don't know who the president of the NRA is now.

    2. Wow, I thought Marylin Manson was the worst human alive. Now I've upgraded him to the level of "Would put him out if he was on fire".

Jim Carey made a great parody song out of Heston's cold dead hands quote. Look it up :)

  8. It's infuriating because the vast majority of people want improved background checks and assault weapons banned but the gun lobby has so much money that they pour into the pockets of craven, greedy politicians. The argument too that the only people who can stop bad people with guns are good people with guns is ponderous because there have been massacres on military bases! And there have been studies that show that people with guns, good or not, become more aggressive and make people around them more aggressive. I hate when people fight against facts. It drives me insane. I'll leave it to Jim Jeffries and his brilliant routine on gun control and their flimsy arguments: https://youtu.be/0rR9IaXH1M0

    1. He is absolutely brilliant. However there is a fact that in America the four states with the most relaxed gun laws also have the least gun crime. It throws a spanner into the works.

    2. Long ago when the shooter (I can't remember his name) climbed the tower at the University of Texas, word spread that someone was up there with a gun, picking off people. The police were soon on the scene, and went up to the tower only to find that concerned citizens with guns had come out and were shooting at them because they thought the officers could be snipers.

    3. Point back in gun control's favour.

  9. You're not even kidding. It's so frustrating. We own guns, but I'm completely for more gun control. If you know what you want, it seriously takes less than 30 minutes to acquire a gun legally (we've done this three times now). That's less than an hour for a random whack-job to buy a gun, some bullets and take it anywhere to kill someone. And especially now, in Texas, we have open carry laws. So any whack-job can openly carry that gun they acquired in less than 30 minutes. It's scary.

    1. Background checks just seem like such a basic concession. I think the worry is that the second amendment means even those wack jobs have the right to a gun. Even if they don't pass the background check, it's against the constitution to ban them.
