Idea for a Bloghop?

I don't think I've ever been able to really define what this blog is about. The best attempt I can make is that I try to explore everything that makes me... me. I've been in situations where someone's asked me a simple question like "Why don't you drink?" I'd try to give them an honest answer, but I would end up having to explain more and more about the decisions and experiences I've had up to that point. I'd eventually end up making my way from "Here's why I don't drink" to "These are my struggles with religion".

People are always interesting, even if they don't know it. There have been billions of moments, big and small, that have come together to make you who you are today. So I thought it might be a good idea to explore that. Tell me what you think.

The idea is for a monthly bloghop called "Question of the Month". Once a month (first Sunday or second Wednesday etc), I'll post an interesting question and everyone involved answers it on their own blog.

It could be really big and personal:
"Who's the biggest influence on your career?"
"What's something you turned down which you wish you hadn't?"
"What three things would you do tomorrow if fear wasn't stopping you?"

It could be lighthearted:
"What was the first concert you went to?"
"What's the best job you've ever had?"
"If you had to pick one now, who would be your best man/maid of honour?"

Or it could be ridiculously small in scale:
"Which Back to the Future movie is the best?"
"How many music tracks are there on your phone/mp3?"
"What's the best kind of sauce?"

Let me know if you think this would be fun to do. Any suggestions for improvements would also be great :)

  1. I don't generally do bloghops because circumstances (like how tremoury I am that day) make it difficult to be consistent. Once a month, however, I think would be do-able.

    Count me in!

    1. Well there's the option of writing it out beforehand and scheduling it. But of course if you weren't feeling up to it, we'd all understand :)

  2. I would love to bloghop with you, under the circumstances that I get the questions in advance. I try and write a few posts at a time because my work/school/raising mushy schedule is real hectic. But, yes, I am in!!!!

    1. I was thinking maybe revealing next month's question at the same time as I reveal my answer to the previous question. And making a page on my blog dedicated to this month's question and the people participating.

    2. I love that idea!!!! I think it's perfect.

  3. Once a month is doable. That's why the IWSG runs the first Wednesday of the month.
Yeah, would need to know questions in advance. And it needs to run on higher traffic day, like Monday, Wednesday, or Friday. Don't forget a badge and a sign up list.
I've done dozens of blogfests - let me know if you need help with anything.

  4. I don't do bloghops, BUT I find your ideas to be interesting, mate!

  5. I think this is a great idea! You think up interesting questions. And once a month is not too demanding a schedule.

    1. Yes, that's the consensus I'm getting. Any more than once a month and people would already be too busy.

  6. Why not...folks are always looking for something to stimulate the old brains and address something new. It is very important to put up a reminder on one of the more busy days to help those of us who need a bit of time to write ahead and schedule the post. We can always link in on the day it appears.

    1. I need to figure out how to ask the question and how far out from the answer date to ask it.

  7. Once a month is easy to do. But if you are looking to get a full response I'd suggest making it something thought provoking where people can rant a bit. Otherwise could be like R and end up a two word post lol plus the question in advance, as said, is always good. I get the why don't you drink one too a bunch, what I come back with usually shuts them up quick lol

    1. Hahaha I shudder to think what you'd say that would shut those people up ;)

  8. Oh, I would definitely do that. As I think you've determined by now, I like to run my mouth (or keyboard, to be more precise) in all sorts of mentally ill directions.

    1. Maybe we could submit questions too. You could mix them, add them together... rearrange them... like: "What's your best pick up line when your significant other is not with you?" (Joke)

    2. That's a great idea! It'll take some of the pressure off me ;)

  11. Perhaps I'm one of the few that like bloghops, eh? I'm in. I try to blog five days a week and frequently do the drawing/cartoon. Hey, I get writer's block blog style sometimes, so I love having a topic chosen for me.

My only suggestion would be to get yourself a "Linky" list to automate the process.

    Go for it, MD!

  12. Barry Manilow. He'd be my maid of honor, and he was the first concert I went to. Oh, sorry, you didn't start yet...I'm game. Great idea, Michael. We used to do a lot of this kind of thing back in the day. But these faded away. I'm glad you're starting this.

    1. Hahaha "Back in the day..." I love hearing that in terms of blogging ;)

  13. I agree with Pat. I like the thought provoking questions where the response is going to take some time to think out. Not just a 2 worder, then move on.

I second the linky option to make it easier to hop from blog to blog.

    Good luck with your hop!

  15. If it's only one question each month, it might be challenging to participate in. For instance if you asked me, "what's the best job you've ever had"... all of my jobs have been quite boring and not in the least bit worth talking about.. though I suppose I could be creative and make some sort of satire about it. Or if you ask "what's your favorite Back to the Future movie", I have only seen the first one. Though on the other hand, you do have the entire month to come up with a good question that every could write something interesting about.

    1. Actually now that I think about it, if there are enough people involved there probably won't be a question that everyone's happy with :P

  16. I like your idea, MICHAEL.
Right now I'm in the process of moving, so I have little free time. But once the move is made, I have Internet service, and I'm settled in, I would definitely participate on a regular basis.

  18. I don't usually do blog hops as I try to keep my blog mostly poetry, but I'd still come around and read what you post here.

  19. I like your idea. My blog is about whatever is wandering through my brain on a particular day.

  20. Not a bad idea, but I would prefer to give my answers in a comment to your post. Tomato ketchup has got to be the best sauce, right?

  21. It is hard to explain some things to people, I agree. I usually just don't.

Blog hops are time-consuming, but they can be fun if it's not a busy day. :)
